The climate of the area of the gold rush greatly contributed to the failure of many peoples' journeys. Alaska is often said to have a nine-month long winter, but to many of the travelers, it seemed even longer. The northern half of Alaska is in the Arctic Circle, which seems to speak for itself. This means that the winds are faster and harsher, the snow falls for longer, and the blizzards seem to be never ending. The other seasons brought challenges as well, including navigating the deep mud and swiftly flowing rivers.
