Whether it was the icy ground or the steep mountainsides, the terrain made the trails hazardous and the camps difficult to maintain in livable condition. Many people became exhausted and sick and were forced to give up the search and return empty handed, an outcome the opposite of what the Alaskan Gold Rush promised.
